Is De De Pyaar De an Indian Version Of Meet The Parents?

Released on November 14, 2025, De De Pyaar De 2 is the sequel to the 2019 hit film that was appreciated for its honest look at unconventional love. While the original focused on the male lead convinced his family to accept his relationship, this cheeky sequel flips the script. Set six years later amidst a chaotic wedding season, the story follows Ashish Mehra (Ajay Devgn), a middle-aged divorcee, and his much younger girlfriend, Ayesha (Rakul Preet Singh). The central conflict arises when Ayesha takes Ashish to meet her parents, Rakesh (R. Madhavan) and Anju (Gautami Kapoor), who claim to be progressive but struggle to accept a son-in-law who is almost the same age as the father.

Acting

The performances are the highlight of the film. While this is an Ajay Devgn film, he graciously steps back, playing Ashish with a cool, calm, and mature demeanor, though his character is sometimes too quiet. The movie truly belongs to Rakul Preet Singh, who delivers a sparkling performance. She has a meaty role as a woman who stands by her choices and refuses to be judged, balancing glamour with emotional depth.

R. Madhavan is excellent as the “villain” of the love story. He plays the overprotective father with style, never becoming a caricature. He captures the anxiety of a father who sees the age gap as a threat to family honor, shifting between selfish and caring moments. His chemistry with Gautami Kapoor is solid. Additionally, Jaaved Jaaferi brings sharp humor as Ashish’s friend, and his real-life son, Meezaan Jaaferi, adds to the comedy as a rival suitor.

Direction and Screenplay

Director Anshul Sharma and writers Luv Ranjan and Tarun Jain have crafted a script that empowers the female protagonist. The story is told from Ayesha’s perspective, ensuring she doesn’t need an “exit door” just because of the age difference. The humor is well-handled; instead of being loud, it relies on awkward silences and situational comedy. The director cleverly uses meta-humor, including references to Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Shaitan, Singham, and even Ajay Devgn’s famous pan masala advertisements. However, the attempt to replicate the fun of the first movie sometimes makes the tone feel too high-pitched.

Technical Aspects

Technically, the film suffers from pacing issues. With a runtime of 147 minutes, the movie feels stretched. The narrative structure is quite familiar and lacks a major surprise factor. The editing could have been tighter, specifically in the second half, where the film becomes bloated with about twenty minutes of repetitive melodrama. Despite these lags, the pre-climax and climax bring the energy back, allowing the film to sign off on a strong note.

De De Pyaar De 2 is a decent, light-hearted watch. Although the middle section drags and feels uneven, the film is saved by its genuine humor and strong performances, particularly from Rakul Preet Singh and R. Madhavan. It is a refreshing take on age-gap relationships that will entertain those looking for a mix of emotion and comedy.
